In the framework of European decarbonisation and the search for renewable energy sources, green hydrogen stands out as an effective alternative to reduce the emissions damaging the planet.
What is green hydrogen?
Hydrogen is a highly reactive chemical, only found in combination with several chemicals. Unlike other renewable energies, its consideration as green depends on the type and origin of the energy source (solar, wind or hydro) used for its procurement and production. I.e., depending on its sustainability, the classification may be grey, blue, or green hydrogen.
How is green hydrogen obtained?
Green hydrogen technology lies in water electrolysis, which uses electrical currents to break down water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen.
While fossil fuels can be used in this process, employing renewable energies is the key to creating green hydrogen. Photovoltaic, wind or tidal energy (among others) for electrolysis allows obtaining clean energy through renewable energy sources and water, removing the cost of carbon dioxide emissions.
Advantages of green Hydrogen
- Green hydrogen can produce almost three times the energy of fossil fuels and thus contributes to the development of a sustainable future
- It is easy to store for long periods
- It is simple to transport and export
- Useful in the industrial and agricultural sectors
The European incentives, the restrictions on carbon emissions, and the reduction and cheapening of the process support an ideal scenario for this renewable energy, even though green hydrogen electrolysis is still expensive,
In the long term, green hydrogen will play a fundamental role in benefitting the environment and boosting a new sustainable economic activity in Spain.
